Romania

The work for this project had been divided between some Goe clubs, in order to get better results from all the promoting efforts. The promoting activities were developed mainly in the following Goe centres: Braila, Slobozia, Turnu Severin, Bistrita and Baia Mare.

  • The Braila Goe centre is the strongest youth Goe centre at this moment and one of the most important Goe centre in Romania. The local co-ordinator is Dr. Iulian Toma, who had been the National Youth Co-ordinator since 1992 (and now he is the President of the Romanian Goe Federation). His efforts were sustained by Liliana Iacob, Catalin Albu, Gonciar Stefan, Iulian Nastasache, Barbascu Eugen and some others, in order to promote Goe in the local schools, using mainly the Ing rules for teaching. As a result, there had been more than 500 children who learned the Goe rules and now we can find about 160-200 regular players in the Goe clubs in Braila.
The Braila Goe centre, based on a local Goe Association named "WATARI", edited a Goe bulletin and placed it on internet. See http://members.xoom.com/iulianGOpage/index.htm for the list of the local regular players and some more information about the local Goe activities.

The youth Goe players from Braila had been quite successful in the National Youth Championships, taking almost all the national titles in the last 2 years. They also were the first Romanian Youth players in Sinaia, in the European Youth Goe Championships, this year, both in the under 12 and in the 18 groups. Nevertheless, we consider that these results are not directly related to the promotion programm that we did. Anyway, there was easier to spread the game of Goe in the area, based on such a strong basis. To be more specific, the results of two current title holders in Romania, Magarita Ionut (aged 13) and Coman Gabriela (aged 9) and the very existence of this two players in our Goe organisation can be considered as a direct result of this promoting program.

  • The Slobozia Goe club is another important Goe centre in Romania. Both these two centres received a great help in promoting Goe due to the visits made by two professional players, Mr. Yasuda Yasutoshi-9dan pro and Miss Yuki Shigeno-2dan pro. Yuki had been in Romania twice in the last years and visited a lot of schools in those two cities and in Bucharest. The results of the Slobozia Goe Centre are shown in the additional presentation booklet and are also quite impressive. There are about 600 Children in the main cities of the district that learned the rules and there are more than 100 regular Goe players from this centre.

  • The Bistrita Goe centre is also quite successful, due to the efforts made by Teodor Virtic, the local Goe organiser. He also made a Goe foundation, named "KIYOMIZU" and there are more than 200 Goe players in this city, most of them still in the schools. Their efforts were rewarded by taking the National Youth Goe title under 10, quite one month before. Also, their youth team made a good impression in Sinaia, where had been about 25 players, most of them in the under 12 group. So, we can expect some more from them in the future, based also on their steadiness.

  • The Severin Goe centre is based on the clubs from Drobeta-Tr.Severin, initiated and co-ordinated by Marcel Daescu, which is another dedicated Goe teacher. They also have some 400-500 young players and quite recently they organised an international Goe tournament, who received a lot of appreciates from the participants. The other Goe players from this city, mainly Emil Cenuse and George Bordea did also a good job on promoting Goe in the area.

  • The Goe club from Baia Mare is not as big as the others, but there are some 50-70 Goe players there, mostly children who take this game quite seriously. The local Goe trainer is Bela Nagy, who just graduated from University and who took charge of the Romanian Goe page on the Internet. He also made a Goe page for his club, at http://www.baiamare-club.go.ro and further information can be found there.

Unfortunately, there is no report on Bucharest, concerning this project. Of course, there are a lot of strong players there, there are a lot of tournaments that we organise there, the Romanian Go Federation is also in there, but we didn't find a dedicated Goe teacher in this area. Of course, we are still looking for one and we hope that in the near future we will have a lot of good things to report from Bucharest.
