Dear friends,
Saturday evening
Rita arrived in Amsterdam. We immediately went to the hospital.
On the train Gulya Ganeeva explained in Russian about the situation
and what Rita could expect.
For both Rita and Victor it was a very emotional moment to meet each
other in these circumstances.
Later that evening
we met with Dr. Van den Munckhof, one of the neuro-surgeons who performed
the operation. He again told us that the situation has been very critical
on Sunday last week. Victor has been lucky on several counts. The doctor
explained the cause of the bleeding was most probably only hypertension.
During the operation the doctors examined the vains in Victor brain,
but found no signs of any weaknesses. They think it highly unlikly that
another bleeding will occur.
As we wrote before
the bleeding happened in the left side of the brain. This part controls
the speech function and the functioning of the right side of the body
(unfortunately for a righthanded person like Victor).
His situation one
week later is much better than the doctors expected immediately after
the operation. First of all, Victor is conscious and understands everything
that is said to him. Victor is only partly paralysed but already has
some power in arm and leg. He sits in a chair several times per day.
Also he can speak some words. Dr. Van den Munckhof expects that Victor
can come a long to a nearly full recovery. Also his speech could return,
though perhaps not as fluent.
The key to his recovery
is training. Training of his body: fysiotherapy, and speech: logopedy
(speech therapy). For the coming year Victor must train every day. Only
after a whole year can his condition be evaluated.
After his return
to Russia Victor must be monitored in a hospital for a short period.
He should not be hospitalised for a long period, but go to a reabilitation
centre, where they can guide him during his recovery. The doctors here
will advise on a training program and the necessary facilities.
Depending on arrangements
made by the insurance company we will discuss later today (Monday) how
and when Victor can be repatriated. Perhaps already at the end of this
week.
If you want to send
an electronic message/ postcard to Victor. Please send them to the Go
centre and we will give them to Victor and Rita
We will inform you
as soon as we have more information
Best regards,
Erik
