On IGS a game on 13x13 board was played between 5-dan Martin Mueller (Black) from Edmonton and 4-dan Arnoud van der Loeff
(White) from the NL. Arnoud was free in the choice of his moves whereas Martin Mueller always had to make one of the top-20 candidate moves of the Go program "Many Faces of Go".

Komi was 6.5. After an aggressive game Arnoud won by 5.5 points (including komi).

The revenge (with colors exchanged) will be played on IGS next Wednesday (23 May, 19:00 h Middle European summer time).
The accounts of the players are sws and Arnoud. Spectators are again welcome.

Ingo Althofer.

Didn't you find that 20 was far too high a number to be meaningful on a 13x13 board? Even a computer will filter out a very large number of silly moves such as edge plays in the opening, and once tactical exchanges start I'd expect most computers would include the obvious moves (connect to an atari) in a very high proportion of cases. Plus the number of possible plays decreases all the time. The predictable outcome, it seems to me, is that the computer list is only going to let the eclectic human down very, very rarely. I seem to recall from chess computer work that a best-move list
of 10 was considered too high (different programming philosophy, perhaps, but mutatis mutandis....)

On IGS the second 13x13-game between Martin Mueller (Edmonton, 5-dan) and Arnoud van der Loeff (NL, 4-dan) was played. Arnoud was free in the choice of his moves whereas Martin only was allowed to select among the top-20 candidate moves of the Go program "Many Faces of Go". Arnoud had Black. After a fightful game Martin resigned at move 80.

So Arnoud has won the bet against me, and I will send him some good German cheese.

and/or are not willing to install the PandaEgg application (available form IGS).
