Gentle Joseki part VI by Pieter Mioch

Episode 6 of the monthly Column "Gentle Joseki" reads like a crash-course in joseki / direction of play. I also included a translation of my first article for a Japanese newspaper.

Although I try to keep things simple this does not always work out. This time, for example, I included a very difficult Taisha variation for reasons I cannot quite remember.

Hope to see you at:

or at the index page for links to Gentle Joseki I-V and an introduction about me by Eduardo Lopez.

Subject: who let the dogs out?

*********************************************************

Judging a sequence by looking for and determining if any questionable exchanges are made is the most powerful tool you have to judge a result correctly. And the beautiful thing is, you do not need to be a high-leveled dan player in order to apply it to your own games! When thinking like this, however, do not forget that two strange exchanges, one played by you and one played by your opponent, cancel each other out. It is also true that given enough compensation for having played a bad-shape move can justify it. On the other hand, it is next to impossible to obtain a good result by having played 2-3 questionable exchanges more than your opponent.

Subject: Gentle Joseki, IX

Hello,

Gentle Joseki part IX has just been released by Pieter Mioch, the author. It continues the thread on the 3-4 point joseki. Don't miss it or you might be in deep trouble the next game you play against someone who did read it :)
The article discusses various joseki, both modern as old-fashion style and shows pro games examples to illustrate their typical use. The introduction deals with the current state of affairs of Go in Japan.

I just finished Gentle Joseki 10, this time it's about the 5-4 move.

http://www.cwi.nl/~jansteen/go/articles/mioch/10/index.html

The INDEX page has a new look (brief introduction added for each episode of Gentle Joseki which makes it much easier to use, also for reference) including a link to my "Go-Resume"

http://www.cwi.nl/~jansteen/go/articles/mioch/index.html

Next month I'll start a new series, a -very- thorough analyses of a game which took me 3 months to finish.

Cheers

Pieter
