Subject: O meien wins 2nd honinbo game

O Meien (black) defeats Cho U (7p) by half a point in the second game of the Honinbo title match to tie the score 1-1. In spite of gaining some points in the endgame Cho could not best O. The game can be found at the mainichi news webpage:

Playing black challenger Cho U (21) had two hours left when he beat Honinbo O Meien (39) by the comfortable margin of 2.5 points.

C
ho is now leading the best of seven match by 2-1. According to the game commentary by Takemiya "Cosmic Go" Masaki, O Meien was too eager to go after some weak looking black stones in the opening.
Instead of immediately pressing down on the unsettled black stones a more indirect approach would have been better.

Taking Cho's fast play and youth into account he seems to have the better cards although the Honinbo match is, of course, far from over.
Cho's mentor, Rin Kaiho, must be very proud indeed to see his Taiwan born pupil having the chance of becoming the youngest Honinbo ever.
Ishida Yoshio is currently holding that record. Ishida was 22 years old when he took over the Honinbo title from * guess who *.... Rin Kaiho!

PS Congratulations Catalin!!!

Cho U won the 5th game of the Mainichi Newspaper sponsored 56th Honinbo title by a convincing 1.5 points.
Very tight moves followed by an unbelievable flexibility proved the way to best title holder O meien who, to be sure, played a very good game, too.

Subject: honinbo match game 7 is now being played

Cho U (black) and O Meien (title holder) are going at it in the final game of the Honinbo title match.
The game is played over 2 days (18-19) and regular live updates can be found at:

http://www.mainichi.co.jp/life/hobby/igo01/07/index.html

Cho U played his favorite opening with black, resembling Shusaku's, but not quite. Cho has the chance of becoming the youngest Honinbo ever.

From the first game on all pro commentators did without failing mention that instead of the old "go for walks and hang around" between playing periods O but especially Cho play a lot of Ping-Pong.
Another hot topic was that the players preferred toast and scrambled eggs instead of rice, fish and miso soup for break fast. (which is, of course, totally boring information but Takemiya made it more interesting by adding that during games between the "super" Honinbo Takagawa and Sakata both players often declined any food in the morning, being too wound up (or stressed out) to enjoy breakfast.)

O Meien keeps the Honinbo title for another year.

Challenger Cho U (black) seemed to have the better cards in a game-deciding ko-fight but the ko threats he played threatening to catch another white group lost so many points that the value of the original ko was reduced enormously and O Meien could afford to just let go, giving him a certain lead. Cho U resigned 18:59 Japanese time ending the youngest Honinbo ever dream.

Subject: KT Cup

There seems to be no obvious forum for go news beyond who-won headlines now that the MSO site has gone to sleep, so I'll mention that there is a new richest-ever tournament in Korea, the KT Cup (Korea Telecoms). It has displaced the LG Refined Oils Cup (which is different from the international LG Cup) as top prize - 15 million won instead of 10 million. It is a 64-player knockout leading to a 3-game final.

This seems to confirm that the Korean go world has more than recovered from the financial wobbles of a few years ago.
